April finished quilts

April was a difficult month for me.  Almost loosing my mother.  Two hospital emergency room visits.  Surgery.  And other stuff too.  I did get some quilting work done in between all the happenings.  I’ll start with the quilt that went with the pieced backing I wrote about a couple of days ago.

This is the second one made like this that I quilted this month.  The first one was the first week of April.  It had a blue backing and this one has a red backing.  Both got the same quilting.  Straight lines on the border.

Both got meander with invisible thread on the color pieces and simple back and forth lines with white thread on the sashing.

I also finished this quilt.   It’s a copy of the Habitat Charity quilt done last year.  A lady had seen that one and decided she wanted one just like it so she made it and had me quilt it.  I guess if you can’t win a quilt in a raffle that’s the best way to get one like it.  Don’t you think?

The roofs are slightly different for each house and the lines on the houses are basically the same.

I did a meander design behind the applique.

I did a leaf design on the border triangles and a leaf vine design on the outside border.

Next finished is this one.  It is another house type applique quilt.

Applique quilt

There is no quilting on top of the applique at the owner’s request.  I did stitch in the ditch around all the pieces though.  Again, meandering in the background.   Why meandering so often?  The quilting price chosen by the customer.

Here is another applique block with SID and meandering.

The sashing got simple straight lines radiating out from the cornerstone stars.  I like the effect it created.

The outside border got a leaf and flower design.  The inside borders got straight lines to go with the sashing.

I was pretty close to ‘on schedule’ in April despite all the happenings last month.  I did finish four quilts.  One a week is do able even when life gets hectic.  A couple more days and all the Derby happenings will be over for another year… YIPPIE!  I do get tired of hearing a dozen motorcycles race down the street at three in the morning or four or five booming thumping cars, all playing different music,  go by the house at the same time.

I haven’t been to get the Dare to Care foods for a couple of weeks.  My neighbors have asked if I’ll be well enough to start going again next week if they cart it home for me.  Yes, I think I should go.  I think it’s time for another canning lesson.   The next quilt is on the machine and waiting for me.

Yup, I get a whole lot more done when I stay off the computer. On the computer I do nothing but sit and read.

I can’t believe how you are able to accomplish so much with so many difficult things going on in your life. You mentioned that the owner chose meander because of price. How much did you charge?

She chose my light custom which I price at 2.5 cents per square inch. A heavier (more dense) custom price would be 3 cents per square inch and I’d do a background fill instead of meandering. After that it gets into the heirloom category. Some of my customers really don’t want a quilt that “can stand up by itself” after quilting. They want very light quilting so the quilt has good drape but they like custom designs. That’s what I call light custom.
